Mirko Grmek

Mirko Dražen Grmek ( born January 9, 1924 in Krapina, Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes; † 6 March 2000 ) was a Croatian- French medical historian, writer, and scientist.

Grmek is considered one of the pioneers and founders of the medical history. His whole work is focused on the historical study of medical knowledge and medical practice with current scientific methods, and in particular the history of ideas. He introduced the concept of Pathozönose, which is the sum of the diseases that occur at a certain time in a certain place and in a particular society. A close associate was Danielle Gourevitch.

1991 Grmek was awarded the George Sarton Medal.
