Miroslav Katětov

Miroslav Katětov ( born March 17, 1918 in Tschembar ( since 1948 Belinski ) in Russia; † 15 December 1995) was a Czech mathematician, psychologist and chess players. His father was a Czech in Russia Member of the Czechoslovak Legion, the mother was a Russian woman, the family was born in 1923 in Czechoslovakia.

Miroslav Katětov ended in 1939 graduated from the Faculty of Science of Charles University in Prague. During the war he had a job at the psychological institute where he analyzed statistical data. Even as a student he came with topology and functional analysis in contact; during the war, he attended private seminars ( the university was closed) on these topics that should constitute his main area for the next 25 years. He has worked on normal spaces, dimension theory and uniform spaces. Since the 1970s, he turned back to mathematical applications in psychology.

From 1954 to 1957 Miroslav Katětov was director of the Charles University in Prague.

Furthermore Katětov was a very good chess player. In 1951, the title of International Master, he was awarded by the World Chess Federation FIDE. After calculating its historical Elo rating, he was in July 1944 with a rating of 2644 from 16th place in the world rankings. He took part in several friendly contests, be it for the Czechoslovakian national team and the city of Prague selection. Katětov won the 1944 Championship of Prague superior with 80 % sodium result, he was in 1946 in Ostrava second in the championship of Czechoslovakia.
