Mitch Albom

Mitchell " Mitch " David Albom (* May 23, 1958 in Trenton, New Jersey, USA) is an American author, sports writer for the Detroit Free Press, radio host and TV commentator.

Albom wrote the highly successful American novel Tuesdays with Morrie (1998). The book sold exceptionally well after it had been presented by Oprah Winfrey in Oprah 's Book Club. The television film starring Hank Azaria and Jack Lemmon was the most watched television movie in 1999 in the U.S. and received four Emmies. His novel, The Five People You Meet in Heaven (2005 ) was also a New York Times bestseller, which the critics have panned as too sentimental though. Also, this novel was for the U.S. television film starring Jon Voight, Ellen Burstyn, Michael Imperioli and Jeff Daniels. More novels are just one more day (2006) and A day with you (2008).

After his experiences with Morrie Schwartz, he started a charity organization called " A Time to Help". Every month the group carrying out a project that helps the Detroit population. There have been carried out projects to help homeless shelters, soup kitchens, nursing homes and orphanages. Albom and his Radiokomoderator Ken Brown lead the projects and try to use A Time to Help as a catalyst for more volunteering.

Mitch Albom appears regularly on the television programs Sports Reporters and SportsCenter on ESPN. His radio show is broadcast from WJR in Detroit. Albom is a member of a rock band called the Rock Bottom Remainders. All members of the band are writers. He studied at Brandeis University and Columbia University. Before becoming a journalist, he worked as an amateur boxer, nightclub singer and pianist.

In 2011 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Michigan State University.
