Means Aletsch Glacier and Aletschhorn

The Aletsch Glacier is a valley glacier resources in the southern part of the Bernese Alps. It is located entirely in the Swiss canton of Valais. He belongs to the system of the Aletsch glacier and was associated as a side glacier of the Great Aletsch Glacier to 1970 with this. The total area of the Middle Aletsch Glacier was determined in 2009, with 8.42 km ². In 1997, the length of the glacier was 5.1 kilometers in the following years, the change in length could not be reliably determined, since it is heavily covered with debris at the bottom. The exposure of the glacier is southeast.

His starting point takes the center Aletsch glacier on the eastern slope of the Aletsch horn ( 4'193 m above sea level. M. ) and on the southern slope of the triangular horn ( 3'811 m above sea level. M. ). In places, the glacier is at the top of steep, slope lies partly above 40%. In the southeast valley running between Geisshorn ( 3'740 m above sea level. M. ) to the west and by the Olmenhorn ( 3'314 m above sea level. M. ) in the east of the center collects Aletsch Glacier. From Geisshorn still pushes another snowfield it. In 1992, the glacier ended at an altitude of 2292 m. The melted water flows from there to the Great Aletsch glacier about a kilometer away and is taken therefrom, sometimes dammed a small meltwater during the summer at the margin.

The area of the Middle Aletsch Glacier was recorded together with the Great Aletsch Glacier in December 2001 as a World Heritage Swiss Alps Jungfrau -Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site.
