Miyoko Watai (Japanese渡 井 美 代 子, Miyoko Watai; born January 8, 1945 in Saitama Prefecture ) is a Japanese chess player and functionary. It bears the title of International Master (WIM) and is Secretary General of the Japanese Chess Association.

Chess career

1975 Watai won the inaugural round of the Japanese Women's Championship. 1978, 1979 and 2002, she was able to repeat this success. International, she represented Japan at the zone tournaments of the Women's 1972 ( Skopje ), 1978 (Singapore ), 1985 (Chengdu ), 1991 (Kuala Lumpur ) and 1999 ( Ho Chi Minh City). On the interzonal ladies 1979 in Alicante she finished level on points with Narelle waiter the last place. As a member of the Japanese women's team took part in all the Chess Olympiads 1972 to 1986 and from 1996 to 2002, scoring a total of 62.5 points out of 142 games.

Watai is currently Secretary General of the Japanese Chess Association, and a member of the Rules Committee. It is committed to the promotion of chess in Japan, among other things, she is working as a chess teacher of the Super Smart Chess League (スーパー· ·スマートチェス リーグ), the co-founder and organized of her children's and youth program of the Japanese Chess Association.

As an author she has written several chess books. Since the end of her active career, she worked as a referee and tournament director on almost all major tournaments in Japan, most recently at the 2013 National Championships in Tokyo.

Private life

Watai is a graduate of Meiji Yakka Daigaku (English Meiji Pharmaceutical University ) and worked as a pharmacist. She lived on the territory of today Ōta and met several times beginning in 1973 with the American chess champion Bobby Fischer. From 2000, they lived together in her apartment. After his arrest on 13 July 2004, she initiated the campaign for his release. In August 2004 Watai and Fischer were married. From April 2005 until Fischer's death Watai lived with him to Iceland.
