Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury

Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury ( Bengali: মিজনুর রহমান চৌধুরী, Mijanur Rahmaan Caudhurī; * October 19, 1928; † 2 February 2006 in Dhaka ) was a politician from Bangladesh. From 9 July 1986 to March 27, 1988 he was the prime minister of his country.

Chowdhury was born in Chandpur District in what is now Bangladesh. Since his college days he was politically engaged. As a member of the Awami League, he became in 1962 the first time in Pakistan's Parliament - elected - the territory of Bangladesh was then in Pakistan. As Mujibur Rahman and other leaders of the Awami League were arrested in 1966, was Chowdhury Managing General Secretary of his party until he was arrested in 1967 itself. After his release, he was active in the Bengali independence movement of the early 1970s. Since the independence of Bangladesh Chowdhury was a long time member of parliament. In Mujibur Rahman's government cabinet, he was Minister of Information from 1973. After his assassination in 1975, he resigned from this post and led a faction of the Awami League.

In the early 1980s Chowdhury supported the takeover of power by Hossain Mohammad Ershad in 1984 and a member of the Jatiya Party. While Ershads presidential Chowdhury was for two years - 1986 to 1988 - Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

Chowdhury 2001 was again a member of the Awami League and was active until his death as a political consultant.
