Mizrah

Misrach ( Hebrew spelling: מזרח ) is the Hebrew name for the East, derived from the tribe זרח (German: rise, train ). It denotes, probably from Sephardic tradition coming, the compass direction in which the pious Jew bowed in prayer, similar to the herein قبلة Qibla of Muslims. To avoid the appearance of a sun-worship, it is recommended to deviate several degrees from the eastern direction. What is meant is not the East as the rising of the light, as it is understood as in Western Christianity - ex oriente lux - but the Jerusalem temple as a place of sacrifice. Many homes have a small carpet, a drawing, etching, etc. with the inscription מזרח hang, with which it is able to orient themselves in their prayers. It contains God's name, pictures of the temple in Jerusalem and the Temple Mount, or a menorah.
