Modane

Modane (Italian Modana ) is a commune with 3351 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Savoie and the Rhone-Alpes region. Modane is known through the winter resort of Valfréjus.

Geography

The municipality is situated on the River Arc, who formed the valley of Maurienne. It is the last village before the Mont Cenis tunnel for rail and road transport and is located a few kilometers before the climb to the Mont- Cenis Pass, which leads as the tunnel to Italy.

History

Modane belonged in the Middle Ages to the County of Savoy, which merged in 1720 in the Kingdom of Sardinia. On March 24, 1860 Savoy and thus Modane was ceded to France.

The construction of the Mont Cenis railway tunnel from 1857 to 1871, the north portal is located in Modane, has strongly influenced the location and let the population grow strong. During the construction period were about 800 workers in the village, who then had 1,203 inhabitants ( 1860), quartered. 1901, the population had risen to 2,603 ​​inhabitants.

As 1968 started the construction of the Mont- Cenis road tunnel, the municipality had 5,500 inhabitants. The tunnel was opened in 1980.

Traffic

Modane located on the Mont Cenis railway. The train station of Modane is border station for the rail transport to Italy. He is a stop of the three times daily service in both directions TGV Paris - Milan. Furthermore, located in Modane the entrance to the Mont- Cenis road tunnel at the end of the Autoroute A43. It leads in the tunnel as the N 566 to the border and there as Italian T 4 ( Traforo 4 ) to the beginning of the Autostrada A32 to Turin.
