Modulus Guitars

Modulus Guitars is an American musical instruments manufacturer who is mainly known for bass guitars made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic ( CFRP). The company's name refers to the modulus of elasticity (English: Young's modulus ), as CFRP has a very high elastic modulus.

Background

Traditionally, electric guitars are made of hardwoods and partially equipped with an adjustable neck tension rod of steel. However, the natural material wood is very inhomogeneous, so that the material properties such as density and rigidity over the guitar neck are not constant. In combination with the Truss Rod, this leads to the fact that it comes along the guitar neck to both volume and pitch fluctuations. By replacing the wood with modern materials to this disadvantage can be eliminated. Especially CFRP is here because of its high rigidity and low weight.

Company founder Geoff Gould works originally in the aerospace industry where he has already gained experience with fiber-reinforced plastics. After his release experimented Gould, an avid bass guitarist, with the material to manufacture to guitar necks made of CFRP hollow sections. In 1977, he was able to present a first prototype at the show. With some of his old colleagues, he founded Modulus Graphite with which he produced guitar necks for other guitar manufacturers. Later, the production of its own, complete instruments was added and changed its name to Modulus Guitars.

Closing of the company

Since there was no new investor, the company was forced to close in early 2013 due to the poor economy. It produces no further basses and guitars more under the name modulus. Since November 2013, the company's website is no longer available.
