Mohamed El Naschie

Saladin Mohammed El Naschie ( born 1943 in Cairo ) is an Egyptian mathematician, physicist and engineer. He was editor in chief of the journal Chaos, Solitons & Fractals, and has held positions at several European and Egyptian universities. Criticism was based on the alleged pseudo-scientific character of his works, in which, under the guise of mathematics Numerology will operate.

El Naschies work focuses on his E -infinity theory, a fractal cosmological world formula. He claims that his theory models a harmonious production of quarks and elementary particles by a centered on a golden ratio fractal space-time. El Naschies theories are regarded as scientifically worthless, mathematicians believe that El Naschies theories and statements do not make sense. The E -Infinity theory has become the subject of many discussions on the Internet, critics are of the view that the E- infinity theory will advertised by a large number of sock puppets.

Life

El Naschie visited by his own admission training centers in Hamburg and Hanover. His doctorate in mathematics, he received from the University of London. He admits to his "Distinguished Fellow" at the Johann -Wolfgang- Goethe University, which is denied, according to a report in the journal Nature this. It shall also provide to be senior advisor to the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Science and Technology, an independent confirmation does not exist.

El Naschie has published numerous articles in scientific journals. So far, he has published over 300 works, which mainly deal with the E- infinity theory, individual work deals with quantum mechanics and nonlinear dynamics.

Work in a scientific environment

Characteristic of El Naschies work is numerology and the Leadership of approximate numeric similarities.

His thesis is largely attributed no significance. On MathSciNet, a study published by the American Mathematical Society collection of reviews of mathematical work, one reviewer remarked about comments about the quantum gravity and the Cantorianische space-time: "This work gives the reviewers the impression that it contains no mathematics ."

Chaos, Solitons & Fractals

El Naschie took over the leadership of Chaos, Solitons & Fractals, after the magazine was threatened by the adjustment due to the declining number of submitted contributions. Although the magazine was published by Elsevier, no further control of El Naschies sheet guide took place.

El Naschie used the magazine largely to publish his own articles. Alone Volume 38, No. 5 of Chaos, Solitons and Fractals contained five items El Naschies, which was not subject to peer review. Since El Naschie frequently cited himself, the magazine soon had a higher impact factor than any qualified mathematical journal. His editorial practices have been criticized, among others, Douglas Arnold, president of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

The Elsevier " bundles " its magazines and sells them as a complete package at a lower price to its customers. Since the cost of the laid journals with eg $ 4,500 for an annual subscription of unbundled Chaos, Solitons & Fractals are high, this distribution system was attractive to the customers. The non-acceptance of individual magazines has not been possible, which is why Chaos, Solitons and Fractals came into the inventory of many university libraries, irrespective of his unscientific content.

During the year 2008, multiplied from an article by the mathematician John Baez criticism of El Naschies operation and the Elsevier publishing house that no quality control carried out in spite of its high selling prices and had promoted its sales practice, the distribution of Chaos, Solitons and Fractals. The editorial also published by the Elsevier journal Topology resigned in protest.

The criticism was taken up by the journal Nature and more non- science -specific media, including the New York Times, Slashdot and The Time. In response to the criticism Elsevier El Naschie relieved of his post. A lawsuit against El Naschies Nature and the author Quirin Schier Meier for libel was dismissed on July 6, 2012.

As a consequence of the events of El Naschie changes to the Impact Factor and the principle of the evaluation of scientists, universities and journals based on the number of citations were demanded. In addition to its high impact factor El Naschie had lifted its Selbstzitierungen the University of Alexandria, among others, by the internationally fourth place in citations in the top 200 list of world university rankings of the Times Higher Education.
