Moldovan National Division

The Divizia Naţională is the top division in Moldovan football. It is operated by the Moldovan Football Federation.

History

During the Soviet period, a regional champion was played out in the Moldovan republic. After the country's independence, an independent national champion is determined since 1992.

In the spring of 1992 Zimbru Chisinau managed in a comprehensive twelve teams first league win of the Moldavian Championship. By 2000, the club should dominate the championship and was surmounted only in 1997 by Constructorul Chisinau. Since 2001, Sheriff Tiraspol dominated the championship.

The number of teams in the first division varied in recent years. Were initially 12 teams notch, played from the second season of 16 teams for the title. 1994/95 there were only 14 in the following season 16 Starting in 1997, there was a reduction: first, to 14 clubs, from 1998 to ten teams.

From 2000/ 01 there were only eight teams in the first division for the season 2006 /07 was increased again to ten clubs. 2009/10 there were 14 teams briefly before again since then is played with twelve teams.

Current mode

Currently, twelve teams compete for the title of the Moldovan Master in Divizia Naţională. They play three times in a season against each other, each one home and one away game, plus another game, in which case the home advantage will be drawn. A win is a team receives three points for a draw, a point is awarded.

The first table after 33 games will be crowned national champion and occurs in qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. The table represents the Second Cup Winners Moldova in qualifying for the UEFA Europa League.

The two bottom club are automatically relegated and in the following season, replaced by the top two clubs in the Divizia A.
