The genus Poecilia, which is called by her fertility also millions of fish, is one of the live-bearing tooth carp ( Poeciliinae ). Poecilia species reproduce ovoviviparous. There are 37 species of the genus, all of which occur in fresh and brackish waters of southern North America, and the West Indies, Central and South America to the estuary of the Río de la Plata. They are the most widespread species of the family of viviparous livebearers.

Features

Their size varies from about two centimeters ( Poecilia Dauli ) and about 15 centimeters ( Poecilia velifera ). The body is stretched to squat. The Gonopodien of the genus are the shortest of the family. At the end is a spoon -shaped, fleshy organ of touch, which encloses the third ray of Gonopodiums.

The genus is divided into subgenera Acanthophacelus, Mollienesia and Poecilia.
