Molo (Iloilo City)

Molo is one of the six districts of Iloilo City, the capital of the province of Iloilo. It is located in the southern part of the island of Panay in the Philippines.

Originally founded by the Spanish general Ronguillo de Peñalosa as the Pariancillo de Molo or Chinatown in 1581, the municipality was only a few kilometers from the Spanish settlement of Villa de Arevalo. Here once flourished commercial trade and served as the main entry point for Chinese immigrants to Panay. It is also the origin of the popular pasta dish called " Pancit Molo ". Molo was then occasionally plagued by Muslim pirates from Mindanao and was Christianized chiefly by the Jesuits and Dominicans. Center of the municipality is the Plaza Molo where the Fiesta de Molo also takes place annually in June. There is also the historic Iglesia de Santa Ana or better known as the Molo Church. The main trade route applies the M.H. del Pilar Street, where today two universities, one college, three public schools, private luxury hotels and some shops.

Since 1937 Molo is a city district of Iloilo City.
