Biology

The caterpillars develop on smaller fireweed species ( Epilobium ) as the Mountain Fireweed (Epilobium montanum ), the Marsh Willowherb (Epilobium palustre ), the Kleiblütigem fireweed (Epilobium parviflorum ) and the Vierkantigem fireweed (Epilobium tetragonum ). The caterpillars live in the seed pod and eaten by the end of June to July the immature seeds. Infested by caterpillars seed capsules are shorter, curved and has a small hole. Butterflies can be found throughout the year. After the winter they can often be observed from late spring to early summer. According to other data, the moths do not seem to winter in Central Europe.
