Monarchy of Sweden

The King of Sweden is the monarchical head of state of Sweden. The Office has held since September 15, 1973 King Carl XVI. Gustaf.

Position within the organizational structure

Sweden is a parliamentary monarchy. Real powers are not granted to the king. Rather, the legislature, the budget law and the control of the government and administration at the Reichstag, the executive in the government, the authorities and the local authorities and the judiciary lies with the courts.

The position of the king in the constitutional organization structure is regulated Regeringsformen 1974, especially in the main state organization law. Relevant provisions are:

Chapter 1 - Basics of State organization § 5 monarchical form of government, succession The King or Queen, or after the Act of Succession holds the Swedish throne, is the head of state of the Empire. The Riksdag decides whether the king is to be deemed abdicated. § 6 Interim Regent in vacancy and temporary prevention If no one is available for the office that meets the requirements of § 3 or 4, the Reichstag may appoint another person as provisional regent due to a regulation of the Government. The President of the Reichstag or in case of his absence, the Vice- President of the Reichstag is due to a regulation of the Government as a temporary regent, if this, no other person is capable of. § 7 indemnity The king can not be held responsible for his actions. The Regent shall not be held responsible for his actions as head of state.

Succession

The office of king is hereditary. The throne is in the Act of Succession ( Successionsordningen, SO) of 1810 regulated the equal female succession was introduced by revision of this law in 1979.
