Monastery of Sant Bernat de Rascanya

The Monastery of Santa Maria de la Valldigna ( Vallis digna ) is a former Cistercian abbey in Valencian Community in Spain. It is Simat de la Valldigna approximately 30 km south of Valencia in the province of Valencia.

History

The monastery was founded by Aragon in 1298 by Jakob ( Jaime ) II and occupied by monks from the monastery Santes Creus. Thus, it belonged to the filiation of Clairvaux Abbey Primary. From Valldigna went in 1381 the foundation of the monastery of Sant Bernat de Rascanya ( first Priorat) in Valencia, which later under the name of Sant Miquel dels Reis joined the Hieronymitenorden. The gothic building suffered severe damage in 1396 and 1644 earthquakes. The present church dates from the Baroque reconstruction. In the train of the dissolution of the monasteries by the government Mendizábal the monastery was dissolved in 1835. Parts of the monastery were sold as building material.

Plant and buildings

From the monastery the monastery wall, the King's Gate ( Porta reial ) from the 14th century with the situated nearby, Lady chapel, the abbey church (14th - 17th century ) and parts of the exam with the south wing of the cloister, the refectory (14th century receive ) and the chapter house (15th century). The original church was destroyed by an earthquake.
