Monção is a small town ( Vila ) and a circle ( concelho ) in the district of Viana do Castelo in northern Portugal. It lies on the Rio Minho, about 45 km east of the mouth of the river into the Atlantic at Caminha and about 35 km from Afreira where the Minho from a purely Spanish river to the border between Spain and Portugal.

History

Monção got city rights in 1261. 1368 could be put in a chest on the Minho, the girl Deu la Deu Martins to assist their people in battle against the Spaniards. In her honor are still baked Paozinhos (small bread cake). In addition, adorns a statue of the girl, mythological designed as Danaide, the north side of the Praça ( square). The Cenotaph ( 1679 ) of these local heroine is in the Capela do Cruzeiro in the Igreja de Santa Maria dos Anjos.

Tradition also says: When the Spaniards had in 1368 the Portuguese Monção nearly starved in a siege, was the commander of Mongào with the last flour to bake bread - and threw them the occupiers over the walls of the city - the Spaniards considered for this trick the siege is a waste of time and from subject.

The place is known for its wine ( Vinho Verde, which is mainly produced from the grape variety Alvarinho. ) And for the Festa da Coca on Ascension Day, when and in a move a 2 m high and 5 m long " dragon " against the helmeted armed St. George fights, of course, subject to the evil dragon.
