Geography

Moncarapacho is located southwest of the Serra de Monte Figo. It is 6 km north of the county town of Olhão, and about 16 km north-east of the district capital of Faro.

History

Finds such as the remains of a series of watchtowers and surrounding mounting traces evidence of a settlement of the area before the arrival of the Romans in the 2nd century BC, which made ​​it a part of their province of Lusitania. After invasion of Germanic tribes in the 5th century AD they were expelled from the early 8th century by the Moors, and the area became part of al -Andalus. During the Reconquista, the present municipality was, together with the whole Algarve, in 1250 part of the Kingdom of Portugal.
