Mondoñedo

Mondoñedo is a small town in the province of Lugo Galicia Autonomous Region in the northwest of Spain. The village lies on the edge of the Cantabrian coastal mountains along the route Camino de la Costa of St James, a variant of the Camino del Norte. From here there are still 160 km to Santiago de Compostela. In the village is a small hostel for pilgrims.

The town, the village is classified as Conjunto histórico - artístico, being the bishop (see also List of bishops of Mondoñedo ) and has a major cathedral. The present Romanesque building dates from the 12th century and is provided with baroque towers. Inside stands the high altar a statue of Mary that that was originally Nuestra Señora la Inglesa in St. Paul's Cathedral in London and was rescued during the Reformation period here. The predecessor of the cathedral from the 9th century, the Basilica of San Martiño de Mondoñedo get a little off track and now serves as the Diocesan Museum. There is also a seminary in place.

The original name of the diocese was Britonia and has probably a Celtic immigration of refugees from South England, who fled from there in the 5th or 6th century Anglo-Saxon invaders. The diocese was probably founded by the Suevi to Catholicism came King Theodemir.

Not far from the town there is a more than 7000 m long cave system, Covas do Rei Cintolo.
