Monito Island

Monitoring (Spanish Isla Monito ) is a Puerto Rico belonging uninhabited island in the Caribbean Sea. Administratively it belongs together with the adjacent and much larger Mona Island to Puerto Rican municipality of Mayagüez, in the borough ( barrio ) Isla de Mona e Islote monitoring. Monito is the masculine diminutive of Mona, the name of its neighboring island.

Geography

Monito is located about 5 km north- west of Mona and about 70 km west of the main island in the Mona Passage, which separates Puerto Rico from Hispaniola. The nearly rectangular-shaped island is 500 m long, 350 m wide and has an area of 0.147 km ². The island rises steeply from the sea, forming a plateau reached in the northeast a height of 66 m above the sea.

The island is a nature reserve ( " Monito Iceland Natural Reserve " ) and is home to the Monito gecko ( Sphaerodactylus micropithecus ) also an endangered, endemic species.
