Mons Piton

The Mons Piton is an island mountain on the moon.

The name derives from the French term for " mountain peaks " from. In the documents of the IAU, the name is derived from a mountain called Piton on the " Tenerife Islands ." This is a mistake. The name was originally introduced in 1864 by the English astronomer John Lee, who was one of the peaks of the Montes Teneriffe. The name itself is generic, similar to that designated by Johann Hieronymus Schroeter Mons Pico ( here using the Spanish word for " summit ").

Mons Piton has at the base a diameter of approximately 25 km and extends from the Mare Imbrium, between the Montes Alpes and Montes Apenninus.
