M. situated place with the Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte above the island's capital Funchal on the Portuguese island of Madeira. Monte has 6696 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011).

Traffic

From 1893 to 1943, a rack railway took over the transportation of guests from Funchal to Monte and continue to Terreiro da Luta in 867 m height. This was discontinued due to several accidents. It only remembers the building of the terminal to it.

Today, two cable cars to go to Monte. A valley station is in Funchal, the second cable car to the botanical gardens, the Jardins do Monte Palace.

Due to the steep terrain can be seen on the way back with a basket sled, the toboggan sled or Cesto, the paved road Caminho do Monte slide down to the upper outskirts of Funchal. The original four -kilometer route was shortened to two kilometers, the rest you can cover on foot or by taxi. The basket slides which have no steering or brakes are controlled by two dressed in the traditional white dress sleigh arms and held back by holding back or cross points.

Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Monte

The pilgrimage church of Nossa Senhora do Monte was built from 1741. In the high altar of the church is a venerated image of the Virgin. On August 15 of each year there is a grand procession in honor of the Virgin.

Near the church there is now a tourist restaurant in a luxury hotel turn of the century.
