Montebourg

Monte Bourg is a commune with 2098 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Manche in Basse-Normandie region. It belongs to Arrondissement Cherbourg- Octeville and is the capital of the canton of Monte Bourg. She is a member of the Association of Municipalities Communauté de communes de la région de Monte Bourg.

Geography

The municipality of Monte Bourg is located on the Cotentin peninsula, halfway between Cherbourg and Carentan.

Neighboring communities of Monte Bourg Saint- Germain are de Tournebut in the north, Vaudreville in the Northeast, Saint- Floxel in the east, Éroudeville in the south and Saint- Cyr to the west.

History

Monte Bourg was in WW2 strongly contested by the Americans and Germans. On 22 June 1944, the 4th Division was to occupy the small town of General Roosevelt to advance to Cherbourg. Only when the German front collapsed in Barneville on the west coast of the Cotentin Peninsula, the battle group moved wedge ( 919th Infantry Regiment ) back. A heavily destroyed city remained.
