Montefeltro

The Montefeltro is a historical region in Tosko - Emilian Apennines. Today it is one of the regions of Emilia -Romagna, Tuscany and Marche. It borders with the Republic of San Marino. The name comes from mons feretri (us), the ancient name of the hill on which the town and fortress of San Leo are.

The Montefeltro corresponds to the territory of the old Diocese of Montefeltro, which includes San Marino belongs. Bishopric was first San Leo, since 1572 it is Pennabilli.

Main places of Montefeltro are San Leo and Pennabilli and the management seats Carpegna and Novafeltria. The highest mountain is Mount Carpegna (1415 meters).

In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the places of Montefeltro were mostly to changing dominions, including the Principality of Carpegna, the dominion of the Malatesta, the Duchy of Urbino and other smaller territorial lords until the brands were a total re-integrated into the Papal States. Numerous castles, forts and fortifications bear witness to the territorial conflicts of that time.
