Monterey Institute of International Studies

The Monterey Institute of International Studies ( MIIS ) was founded in 1955 as Monterey Institute of Foreign Studies. It is a private university on the main courses are offered leading to the Master of Arts ( MA). Since 2005, the MIIS has a cooperation agreement with the also private Middlebury College.

The MIIS is located in the heart of Monterey ( California), about 140 miles south of San Francisco. It consists of four organizational units:

  • Graduate School of International Policy and Management ( GSIPM )
  • Graduate School of Translation, Interpretation, and Language Education ( GSTILE )
  • Fisher International MBA Program

The MIIS is known for its courses in translation and interpreting, and has secured a very good reputation in the professional world internationally. Furthermore, the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS ), the Centre for Non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, internationally known. The CNS is part of the Graduate School of International Policy Studies.

In the winter semester 2008, about 860 students were enrolled, the proportion of international students is 48 %. In order to study at MIIS, you have to have a college degree and speak at least one foreign language.
