Montesquiu
Montesquiu is a Catalan municipality in the province of Barcelona, in northeastern Spain. It is located in the comarca of Osona.
Geographical Location and Climate
Montesquiu located about 80 kilometers north of Barcelona on the river Ter. It is situated in the north of the comarca of Osona which he joined in 1990. Previously, he was part of the Comarca Ripollès. The district lies at an altitude 550-885 meters. The landform forms the transition between the plain of Vic and the Pyrenees. The climate also forms a transition between the Mediterranean climate and mountain climate in the Pyrenees. From the first Montesquiu receives the mild temperatures, the second the rain and partly snowfall.
History
The core of the village is in the south of the district, on a terrace above the Ter. The oldest documented building is the 1285 documented castle Castell de Montesquiu. In the 16th century the first house was built, a blacksmith shop on the road from Barcelona to Ripoll. Almost four centuries to Montesquiu developed as an offshoot of the neighboring village of Sant Quirze de Besora from which it was administratively dependent. Finally Montesquiu received independence on 25 August 1934.
Traffic
According to its location and history Montesquiu is a transit point. It is served by the national road C -17 and by the railway line Barcelona - Puigcerdà ( Station Sant Quirze - Montesquiu ).
