Montevergine funicular

The funicular Monte Vergine was opened on 23 June 1956 and connects the city Mercogliano with the monastery of Monte Vergine.

History

The idea of ​​a funicular from Mercogliano to the mountain Monte Vergine came by the then abbot William De Cesare on in 1882. However, it took until commissioning with many interruptions during the construction of the railway until 23 June 1956. Between 1973 and 1981 the railway was closed for extensive repair work.
