Montfort-l'Amaury

Montfort l'Amaury is a commune with 3127 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Yvelines department in the Île- de -France region. It belongs to the district Rambouillet and is the administrative center of the canton of Montfort l'Amaury.

The municipality extends north of the forest of Rambouillet. The city is situated on a mountain ridge 183 meters above sea level. It is bordered on the west by Grosrouvre, Les Mesnuls and Saint -Léger -en- Yvelines in the south, Bazoches- sur- Guyonne the east and Méré in the north.

History

The castle above the city dates from the year 996 and goes back to King Robert II. It was destroyed by the English during the Hundred Years War. The rule Montfort was imposed for the benefit Simon IV de Montfort to the county.

Montfort l'Amaury was in possession of the house Montfort since the beginning of the 11th century. Amaury I. built the city walls, of which today remains to be seen.

The County of Montfort l'Amaury was combined with the Duchy of Brittany, as the heiress of Montfort in 1364 the Duke Arthur II married. With Brittany, the county came in 1532 under Francis I to the French crown.
