Monti (rione of Rome)

Monti (Italian for mountain ) is the I. Rione (neighborhood ) in Rome. It includes the Esquiline Hill, the Quirinal and Viminal that belong to the classic Seven hills of Rome, which gave its name to the district.

History

In ancient times, the area was one of the most densely populated areas of the city. As the center of Rome shifted in the Middle Ages on the Champ de Mars, the hills were largely abandoned and were covered until the 19th century by gardens and vineyards. The medieval name of the district was Regio Montium et Biberatica after the Via Biberatica that crossed the Trajan's Market.
