Montrond (Jura)

Montrond is a commune in the French department of Jura in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Montrond is located at 600 m, about 9 km northwest of the city Champagnole (air line). The village is located in the Jura, in the Côte de l' Today at the northern foot of the Mont Rond, between the plateau Caledonia in the west and the plateau of the Angillon in the east.

The area of ​​25.32 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The larger, eastern part of the area is occupied by a plateau, which is on average 640 m and partly of arable and meadow land, is composed mainly of forest in the south. Among the major forested areas include the Forêt de la Faye de Montrond, the Bois des Cinq- Chenes and the Bois de la Combe Pachod. Towards the south, the plateau descends gradually, with the communal land to the stream of Angillon ranges (inflow of Ain).

In the area of the village, the ridge of the Côte de l' Today, which is oriented southwest-northeast direction according to the strike of the Jurassic in this area rises. Do not form a continuous ridge, but is divided into several, sometimes elongate protrusions that rise more than 100 m above the surrounding plateau. With 679 meters, the highest point in the municipality is achieved on the Mont Rond. The north-east of Montrond located Combe de Vaumoidon forms a valley between two ridges of the Bois de Beguin ( to 660 m). A small part of the municipality lies west of the Côte de l' Today on the plateau Caledonia ( average 580 m). The entire municipality shows no surface watercourses, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground.

History

Several findings indicate that the municipality of Montrond was already inhabited in prehistoric times. In the 13th century founded the Count Palatine Otto III. of Burgundy, the fortress Montrond, in which a small borough developed over time. The castle and the surrounding wall of Montrond were in 1479 by troops of King Louis XI. destroyed. Also in the 13th century the priory was founded Vaux. Together with the Franche -Comté Montrond came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France.

Attractions

The village church of Montrond was built in the 19th century. On the Mont Rond are ruins of medieval castle from the 13th century, including the keep, maintain.

Population

With 514 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Montrond one of the small towns in the Jura. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1881 501 persons were still counted ), a slight population growth was recorded since the early 1970s again.

Economy and infrastructure
