Montsaugeon

Montsaugeon is a commune with 69 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haute -Marne, in the Champagne -Ardenne region. It belongs to the canton of Prauthoy and the Local Government Association Prauthoy s Montsaugeonnais.

Geography

Montsaugeon is located on a hill called La Butte in the southeast of the Champagne- Ardenne region, 43 kilometers north-east of Dijon and 25 kilometers south of Langres, between the municipalities in the north and Prauthoy Isômes in the south.

History

During excavations in the 19th century artifacts made ​​of flint from the Neolithic Age ( 5500-4500 BC) have been found. Are located on the road to Prauthoy two tumuli with tombs from the end of the Bronze Age ( 2200-1200 BC) and from the Gallo -Roman period (52 BC to 486 ). In addition Montsaugeon was on a Roman road ( VR11 ) of Langres ( Ademantunnum ) Til -Châtel ( Tilena ) to Chalon -sur -Saône ( Cabillonum ) led. A Roman milestone of 2 meters height with the inscription " Langres in 12000 feet " was on the D974 in the municipality until 1918. It was destroyed during the First World War by American troops.

Attractions

The Market Hall was built in 1762 Montsaugeon according to the plans of architect Claude -Louis d' Aviler. It consists of four galleries, forming a peristyle around an atrium. It was registered in 1996 in the Additional List of Monuments historiques.

The Church of the Nativity de la de la Vierge ( the Nativity of the Mother of Jesus) was built in the 12th century and in 1926 entered in the Register of Monuments historiques additive. The choir was added in the 13th century.
