Moraingy

Moringue (also called Batay Kréol ) is a combination of martial arts and dance, practiced by peoples of the Indian Ocean. It was developed by slaves on La Réunion.

Mainly Réunion, Mayotte and Madagascar are familiar with this type of battle. The fighting style is very similar to the Brazilian Capoeira.

The battle dance has its roots in the 18th century, when the spread of black Africans for sugar cane cultivation began a mass slavery. The slaves was banned in the French colonial period, to brawl among themselves, which they developed Moringue to the fighting in the eyes of the white mask as a tribal dance. The word is derived from the Malagasy word moraingy, which means " boxing match ". The Moringue is practiced in the rhythm of percussion instruments during competition or training.

Moringue was rediscovered by the Réunion Creole youth in recent years.
