Action

Alexander J. Seiler held in his book on Francesco Rosi film " despite his four or five revisions that learned the script [ ... ] " for a " fairy tale entirely different character: folksy in tone, abounds with ideas and details and in the images of a plump, almost naive sensuality ". Other critics praised the Italian told with verve in rough landscapes and gorgeous costumes fairy tale, but also the musical commentary.
Less enthusiastic peer reviewed the lexicon of international film: "Despite its beautiful images of the film as a compromise with the industry is evident. The committed realist Rosi could not realize his ideas with a staged popular media homage to the " pre-capitalist " folk culture; the interventions of the producer Carlo Ponti are obvious. ". Cinema.de described the film as a costume romance with gentle swipes at church and morality.

You German language version is reduced by almost 20 minutes; Prince Rodrigo became Prince Ramon.
