Moretonhampstead and South Devon Railway

The Moretonhampstead and South Devon Railway was a British railway company in Devon (England). Office of the company was Newton Abbot.

History

The Moretonhampstead and South Devon Railway founded in 1861, received on 7 July 1862, the concession to build a railway line from Newton Abbot Moretonhampstead after. President of the Society was William Reginald Courtenay, 11th Earl of Devon. The construction costs were estimated at 88,500 pounds. The shares of the company were drawn only reluctantly. Moreover, in addition caused the bad weather for the planned construction delays on South Devon Railway engineer PJ Margary route. So this was a 20 kilometer open in the broad gauge of 2140 mm track built only on 4 July 1866. The management was carried out by the South Devon Railway. This company took over the Moretonhampstead and South Devon Railway on 18 July 1872.
