Morillon

Morillon is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Morillon is located at 682 m above sea level. M., northeast of Cluses, about 44 km east-southeast of the city of Geneva (air line). The village is located on the southern edge of the wide valley of Giffre, in the Savoy Alps at the northern foot of the Grand Massif ( winter sports ), in Faucigny.

The area of ​​14.51 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the Savoy Alps. The northern boundary runs along the Giffre, a right tributary of the Arve, which here flows in a wide and largely natural gravel from east to west. From the river, the municipality's area extends southward over the flood plain and up to 2 km wide floodplain. This is followed by a continuously increasing slope, which is drained by several small streams, including the Torrent du Verney, which forms the eastern boundary of the municipality. In the far south, the area extends to the heights of Pointe de Cupoire (1880 m above sea level. M. ) and the Tête du Pré des Saix ( 2113m. M. ), on the highest point of Morillon is achieved. This ridge of the Grand Massif separates the valleys of Arve and Giffre.

At Morillon include the hamlet of Les Champs (720 m above sea level. M. ) and Le Verney (700 m above sea level. M. ), respectively, on the southern edge of the Giffre Valley, as well as various holiday villages and farmsteads. Neighboring communities of Morillon are Verchaix in the north, Samoens in the east, Arâches la Frasse in the south and La Rivière- Enverse in the West.

Attractions

The village church of Saint- Christophe is originally from the 16th century and remodeled in the 19th century. It has a rich interior, including the choir stalls and pulpit from the building time. The old town showing houses in the typical chalet style.

Population

With 594 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Morillon is one of the small towns in the Haute-Savoie region. During the 20th century, the population steadily increased due to high levels of emigration from (1901 were 582 residents counted in Morillon ). Since the mid- 1980s, however, a significant increase in population was recorded again.

Economy and infrastructure

Morillon was until well into the 20th century a predominantly marked by one country and alpine farming village. Today there are various operations of small businesses. In recent decades, Morillon has developed into a resort and thus receive a significant economic upturn. The community is specialized in both the summer tourism as well as on winter tourism ( several mountain railways and ski lifts) and belongs to the tourist region of the Grand Massif.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a secondary road that leads from Châtillon -sur -Cluses after Samoens. Another road connection with Verchaix on the other side of the valley of Giffre.
