Morten Gunnar Larsen

Morten Gunnar Larsen ( born October 1, 1955) is a Norwegian pianist who is very well known for several recordings of stride piano, ragtime and musical collaboration in film and other projects.

Larsen studied classical piano at the Norges musikkhøgskole (1978). In 1975 he had his debut recordings, Classic Rags and Stomps, for which he was awarded the Spellemannprisen 1976. He founded in 1977 the Ophelia Ragtime Orchestra and performed together with the ragtime pianist Eubie Blake, composed for the Larsen Memories of Eubie.

Larsen worked for a long time in New Orleans. This stay resulted in a tour titled One mo ' time ( 1979-81 ), written by Vernel Bagneris. Larsen's cooperation with Bagneris sat in the performance of Jelly Roll! - The music and the man continued, which was dedicated to the pianist and bandleader Jelly Roll Morton.

Larsen played at the Oslo Jazz Festival 1990. He also played eleven months in the off- Broadway show Jelly Roll! The Music and the Man ( 1994-95 ) for which he conducted and published this work as CD (GHB, 1996) also arranged and directed. This work gave Larsen 1995 OBIE Award. He had previously won the Buddy Award and the Foreningen norske jazz musikeres " Årets jazz musician " (1992 ) in his native Norway.

He participated in various recordings of the Magnolia Jazz Band from 1974 to 1993 and part of the Ytre Suløens Jassensemble until 1992. With trumpeter Herbert Christ, he appeared as a duo New Orleans Joys.
