Motherland Party (Turkey)

The Motherland Party ( Turkish Anavatan Partisi, short Anavatan or ANAP ) is a center-right oriented political party in Turkey, which existed from 1983 to 2009 and again exists since 2011.

It was founded in 1983 by Turgut Özal. The party was aligned liberal conservative and advocated a free market economy.

In 1999 the party had 3.2 million members. One reason for this relatively high number of members is the generally high degree of organization of Turkish parties.

History

She put the government from 1983 to 1991 (MP: Turgut Özal ) and 1997-1998 (MP: Mesut Yilmaz ), also it was in 1996 and 1999 briefly involved in coalition governments. You did during her first reign 1983-1989 through economic reforms with the aim of privatization and rolling back state involvement in the economy and pushed for Turkey's accession to the EU. While the Motherland Party in 1983 and 1987 even won an absolute majority in the first parliamentary elections after the end of military rule, melted their electoral base then and especially after 1999 increasingly together. The reason for this decline are - in addition to the growing competition from other newly established parties, such as the programmatically very similar the True Path Party ( DYP ) - also the Parteienfilz, internal infighting and favoritism in the reign Özal held responsible.

In the elections for the Turkish Grand National Assembly from November 2002, they no longer made the leap into parliament because they failed with 5.12% at the 10% threshold. In the meantime, however, she was again represented to 20 July 2007 as a result of parliamentarians walks with 19 seats in parliament. Since the disastrous election defeat of 2002, the Motherland Party endeavored to personal and substantive renewal of the party.

Merger and relaunch

In order to have a better chance for the elections on 22 July 2007, the ANAP wanted to merge with the DYP. However, the fusion failed at the last moment. Reasons included the re-entry of Mesut Yilmaz in the party, which was met with Erkan Mumcu fierce resistance. The Motherland Party ultimately did not occur at the election of 2007. Renewed negotiations with the DYP, which was called since 2007 Democrat Parti (DP), meant that has been accepted at an extraordinary congress October 31, 2009 a merger of ANAP and DP under the name DP.

On 11 September 2011, the party was yet again established.
