The Hiei -zan (Japanese比睿 山) is a 848 m high hill northeast of the city of Kyoto on the border of the two prefectures of Kyoto and Shiga in western Japan. He was thus strategically situated between the important ancient province Ōmi and the imperial capital.

On the east side below the summit Saicho 788 founded with the Enryaku -ji Buddhist Tendai school, whose headquarters is located in 1571 after violent power struggles against Oda Nobunaga in this monastery.

The Shinto Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine near houses the patron goddess of Enryaku -ji.

Today, the Hiei -zan is to achieve both Kyoto and Otsu Cities of from by cable car, as well as on the Hiei -zan Driveway and offers charming views simultaneously to both cities and the Biwako.

At the summit there is a small amusement park for families with children.
