Mount Longonot

Mount Longonot is a stratovolcano in Kenya, which has erupted for the last time estimated in the years around 1860. It is situated in the Great African grave breach southeast of Lake Naivasha. Its name derives from oloonong'ot on the Maasai word, which means " mountain of the many ridges " or " steep spurs " means.

Mount Longonot is available as part of the 52 km ² large "Mount Longonot National Park " under the protection of the Kenya Wildlife Service since 1983. A path leads from the park entrance to the crater rim and continue around the crater. A forest of small trees covers the crater floor and rising from the crater walls small clouds of steam. The mountain offers many wild animals home, especially zebras and giraffes.

The mountain can be climbed with little mountaineering experience within one to two hours. The last climb is a bit steep. Due to the climatic conditions, but you should definitely have enough drinks there. For a complete hike around the crater you should again allow three to four hours.

Mount Longonot is located 60 kilometers northwest of Nairobi and can be reached by a paved road. A nearby town is named Longonot. South of the mountain is a satellite station.
