Mount Murphy

The Mount Murphy is an extinct shield volcano in Marie Byrd Land in West Antarctica.

The volcano is a massive, ice-covered mountain with steep, rocky slopes immediately south of Bear Peninsula. The mountain is covered by three glaciers, the Smith Glacier, the Glacier and the Pope- Haynes Glacier.

Analyzed rock samples show the composition of the volcano. Thus, it consists of alkali basalt, trachyte and Benmoreit. It was discovered during the U.S. Operation High Jump in January 1947 and described below with reference to aerial photographs. The mountain was named by the U.S. Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names ( ACAN ) by Robert Cushman Murphy, an employee of the American Museum of Natural History and the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic experts for birdlife.
