History

A first public concert of classical music is heard in the Imperial Hall of the Residenz after it was released in 1919 for charitable events. 1921 organized Hermann Zilcher, director of the State Conservatory, the " Residenzfestspiele " with works of classical orchestral and chamber music. Zilcher discovers that Mozart's works especially in harmony with environment and architecture of the residence. He therefore organized in the following year the first " Mozart Week in the residence". In addition to the Imperial Hall and the garden room of the residence as another game places the new church and the town theater are included and tested.

From the experience of this festival week Zilcher developed the concept of the Mozart Festival, which should now be held annually. An integral part of the night was music in the courtyard. The festival was over two decades of largely supervised Zilcher and designed. 1942 could still take place in the traditional form. 1943/44, it was more captured ' by joy Power "events in the sense of. With the destruction of the residence in the bombing in 1945, the cycle was finished first. Zilcher died 1948.

Through the use of Mayor Dr. Franz Stadelmayer the Mozart Festival in 1951 could rise again. The decisive factor was the support of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, both financially helped build the concert halls of residence as also took over the artistic direction. Since 1975, the Mozart Festival - Vocal Competition held every two to three years instead of at the same time with the Würzburg Mozart Festival, which is organized by the University of Music Würzburg. The prizewinners' concert is part of the Mozart Festival.
