Norröna in Tórshavn

The Norröna [ nɔrø ː na ] is an auto ferry Faroese Smyril Line.

The wrong Norröna 2009 in the winter and low season week on the line Esbjerg ( Denmark ) Torshavn ( Faroe Islands ), and during the summer season between Hanstholm (Denmark), Tórshavn and Seydisfjörður ( Iceland ). It is the only car ferry from mainland Europe into the Faroes and Iceland. Since October 2010, the Port of Hirtshals in Denmark is approached exclusively.

The forced end of 2008 stopover for travelers to Iceland the Faroe Islands from Monday morning until Wednesday evening ( the Norröna drove in time to Bergen and Scrabster ) offered an opportunity to experience the islands. Due to economic difficulties, the shipping company in the fall of 2008, which could only be averted by a financial grant from the Faroese Government, shall apply from January 2009, a significantly modified schedule from which the shipping company probably expects a better economic result.

History

In 1995 there was the first considerations when Smyril Line to buy a new ship. By including the year-round ferry service in 1998 a newbuilding was agreed and completed in 1999, a contract with the Flensburg Shipbuilding Company ( FSG). The contract was later transferred to the Flender Werft Lübeck. The new Norröna was the last ship which ran on the Flender Werft from the stack before the shipyard was closed due to bankruptcy. The new building is much larger than the old Norröna. It holds 800 instead of 300 cars and 1480 instead of 1050 passengers, it is also much more comfortable equipped. With different cabin categories, restaurants, bars, night club, with gym, swimming pool, sauna and solarium, with on-board cinema, slot machines and entertainment programs are offered as a service on cruise ships. The construction costs amounted to 93.9 million euros.

The new Norröna was delivered on 7 April 2003 at Smyril Line. The old Norröna was renamed Norröna I and after they had done community service for the new Norröna in the spring of 2004 after their accident, sold to Operation Mobilisation in April 2004.

The ship is used not only as a ferry, but also as a cargo ship, and operated the line Hanstholm - Tórshavn twice a week with a cargo capacity of 13,000 tons of goods per week. In winter it can be operated by a core crew of 20 men. Then transported only a few passengers who are mostly Faroese.

Since the winter of 2005 /06 the Norröna wrong also all year to Seydisfjörður, since the winter of 2007/ 08 but on this stretch from October to March as a cargo ferry with no passenger and car transport. The former, which started in the summer months Lerwick harbor was no longer served, but the ship located in the far north of Scotland, Scrabster Harbour was launched in summer 2007.

Since January 2009, neither Scrabster Bergen still be approached. In the winter months, from the Danish port of Esbjerg Norröna went once a week to Tórshavn and back. During the summer months, two trips per week from Hanstholm to Torshavn were held, one of which went on to Seyðisfjörður. For more cargo between Denmark and the Faroe Islands could be transported, while the tourist interesting and lucrative line was operated by Iceland - without the earlier longer enforced stay in the Faroe Islands. In spring and autumn there should be a connection per week on the route Esbjerg - Esbjerg give - Tórshavn - Seydisfjörður - Tórshavn.

2010, the schedule was changed again: Norröna has been running since October 2, 2010 Hirtshals as a port in Denmark.

During inclement weather, the Danish ports Esbjerg and Frederikshavn and Klaksvík serve as a backup in the Faroe Islands ports.
