Muhai Tang

Muhai Tang (Chinese:汤沐海, pinyin: Tang Mùhǎi ) ( born 1949 in Shanghai) is a Chinese composer and conductor.

Life

At first he met with his parents music. Later he studied composition and conducting at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. After his successful deals he attended postgraduate courses in conducting with Hermann Michael at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich. His international career started when Herbert von Karajan invited him to conducting the Berlin Philharmonic during the 1983-1984 season. This invitation was renewed later. He made his U.S. debut with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in 1988. He was head of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra ( QSO ) and conducted by Neeme Järvi, Georg Solti, Claudio Abbado and Eduardo Mata. He also conducted the overture: " The Tailor of Seville ," Turandot "The Planets " by Gustav Holst Since 2006 he has been conductor and music director of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra. Previously, he was Music Director of the Finnish National Opera, the Flanders Orchestra and the Gulbenkian Foundation.

As a conductor, he was in 2002 for his recording of Christopher Rouse's Concert de Gaudi for Guitar and Orchestra won the " Grammy Award for Best Classical Contemporary Composition".
