Mukawwar Managed Nature Reserve

Mukawwar, also Dschazirat Magarsam, is about 20 km ² large island south of the Dungonabbucht in the Red Sea in northern Sudan.

Geography

The 12 km long and up to 3.3 km wide island is situated in the north -south direction, 6.9 kilometers off the coast of south-east of the fishing village Muhammad Qol and belongs to the state of al -Bahr al - ahmar. The rocky sandstone island has cliffs that are obviously eroded by heavy rains. It is largely without vegetation, with bare rock and sand. Only at the south end there are some mangroves. The reaches a height of 94 meters. The Egyptian border is 100 km to the north, Port Sudan about 120 km towards the south. In the north of the island, there are coral reefs in the south and in the northern region of the channel to the mainland scattered mangroves. Are widespread occurrence of seagrass. In the north and east small islands are offshore.

Fauna

Mukawwar is breeding area under the other Weißaugenmöwe and Rüppellseeschwalbe and sea turtles.
