History

The MUMOK was opened on 20 September 1962 as the Museum of the 20th century in the 20er Haus ( the former Austria Pavilion at the World Exhibition in Brussels in 1958 ) in the Swiss Garden. Was founding director Werner Hofmann. In a few years he managed to acquire important works of classical modernism and expand the collection.

From 1979 to 1989 the art historian Dieter Ronte was director of the museum. On April 26, 1979, the Palais Liechtenstein was hired on Alsergrund lack of space as the second exhibition building. This is mainly due to Hans Mayr, who organized in 1977 as president of the Vienna Künstlerhaus an exhibition of works of modern art from the collection of the Aachen couple Irene and Peter Ludwig Vienna.

During the exhibition, the collector couple agreed to give some of the works on permanent loan to Vienna. An inset of the then Federal Minister Hertha Firnberg Austrian committee led negotiations with the Ludwigs and agreed a comprehensive lending of exhibits, but also the question of an adequate accommodation of the art raised.

With the establishment of the Austrian Ludwig Foundation in 1981, many loans were transferred to the inventory of the collection. The museum owes the patronage of the German industrialist and art collector couple around 230 works from its international collection, including important works by Pablo Picasso, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol and Gerhard Richter. In their commitment the foundation of the Austrian Ludwig Foundation in 1981, is falling.

For the transfer of modern works the MUMOK leads since 1991 his name as Contemporary Museum Art Ludwig Foundation Vienna. The Foundation provides for the preservation and presentation of the works and buys add more objects.

On 15 September 2001, the MUMOK in Vienna's Museumsquartier was reopened. The cubic, coated with volcanic stone buildings of the architects Ortner & Ortner offers 4800 m² of exhibition space space for the main works of today around 9000 exhibits comprehensive collection of modern and contemporary art. At the same time it was released as a federal museum on 1 January 2003, the full legal capacity.

The MUMOK was headed from 2001 by Bert precious KÖB. 2006 celebrated "25 years Austrian Ludwig Foundation ". In October 2010, Karola Kraus took over the management of the museum.

On 1 May 2011 the Austrian Post AG expended as part of the Definitive series Art houses a stamp to the object.

Collection and exhibition

The museum houses its existing from about 9000 exhibits its own collection of modern and contemporary art including works by Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Joseph Beuys, Jasper Johns and Roy Lichtenstein, and has a large part of the works and documentation of the Vienna activism.

In addition, leads the MUMOK regular special exhibitions.
