Mundus (general)

Mundus († 536 ) was an East Roman commander under Emperor Justinian I.

About his early life little is known except that he has fought as soldiers of fortune and mercenaries in Hun services and apparently was a Gepid. In the year 529 Mundus ( Mundo ) was then appointed by the Emperor Justinian to the magister militum of the Eastern Roman troops in Illyricum and the Danube frontier. In this role, he managed to repulse an invasion of the Slavs and Bulgars hunno. 531 he supported the general Belisarius in the fighting in the east against the Sassanids, where he participated in the Battle of Callinicum (see also Roman- Persian Wars). Mundus was appointed after the battle as the successor of Belisarius to the magister militum per orientem. 532 he was recalled to Constantinople Opel, where he witnessed the Nika revolt. Mundus behaved loyal to the emperor and helped with the unrest to choke violently and shut down the supporters of the emperor Flavius ​​Hypatius opposite the Hippodrome.

At the beginning of the Gothic War he led, in 535, the troops on the front Illyrian and conquered the city of Salona, as early as next year, however, he came in the fighting life.
