Action
A small homeless boy living on the streets of Shimla, until he is invited by rich widower Ramanath as house help. When he soon realizes that the boy too much befriends his daughter, Kamna, he moves with her to Mumbai ( Bombay). The boy travels to them. There he helps the Fatima widow who adopted him then and there the name Sikandar. She helps him to see his Kamna, which he always called Memsaab.
On Kamnas birthday party, there is a misunderstanding and all hold Sikandar for a thief. After this incident, Fatima suffers a heart attack. However, before she dies, she asks Sikandar on their biological daughter Mehru watch. The Fakir Darvesh Baba encouraged him, despite the loss to make the most of his life.
Sikandar followed his advice and years later, he becomes a rich man. Despite their wealth Sikandar not forget origins and even financed the medical expenses of the now impoverished Ramanath. His hopeless love to Kamna drives him to visit the brothel of the beautiful Zohrabai who instantly fell in love with him.
In a bar he befriends with the lawyer Vishal, which he conveyed to Ramanath on. Thanks Vishal's help, it goes with Ramanaths business up again. In return he wants Sikandar betroth his daughter, but that has already fallen in love with Vishal. Even Vishal loves Kamna, not knowing that she is Sikandars Memsaab. Only when Sikandar sees the two hugging, he will not stand in the way of happiness. At the wedding of the two Sikandar is nearing death and says goodbye to them. It noted Vishal that Kamna is his Memsaab and gets guilt. The funeral will take place on the same day.

Criticism
Bachchan repeated here his typical movie character of a loner damned with mother fixation who lives and fights in the urban jungle. Despite aesthetic shortcomings such as the rapid and abrupt cuts that need to conceal shortcomings in the filming, outstanding representation of confirmed rooting the story in Bombay and Bachchan's actor as an icon of Bombay lumpenproletariat.
