Murwillumbah

Murwillumbah [' mɛwʌlʌm'bah ] is a city in the east of Australia and has about 8000 inhabitants.

Location

The place is located in the northeast of the state of New South Wales in Tweed Shire Council, about 850 kilometers northeast of Sydney, 132 kilometers south of Brisbane and 13 kilometers south of the Queensland border. The city lies on the River Tweed River in the crater of the largest extinct shield volcano in the world, the Mount Warning. James Cook in 1770 gave him his name when he sailed on the Australian east coast. The village lies to the east at the foot of the McPherson Range, is hilly.

The Australians, in their language often use the diminutive ( diminutive ), the city usually just call " Mur- bah ". The name comes from the Aboriginal Murwillumbah and means something like " place where many possums live."

History

The area was first inhabited by Aborigines from the tribe of the Bundjalung. 1873 the name Murwillumbah is mentioned for the first time in history. Two years later the sugarcane cultivation begins in the area. With the connection to the rail network at Christmas 1894 Murwillumbah is expanding its trade. Murwillumbah was the terminus of the railway line to the casino, there existed on the north coast route daily connection to Sydney. In 2004, this route was abandoned due to high restructuring costs.

Even today the people there live mainly on milk production, sugar cane and banana growing and tourism.
