History

Jacques Kerchache, art dealer and specializes in African art, tried in the early 1990s the "Art premier" ( coined by him term ) to gain entry to the Museum of the Louvre.

He published in 1990 in this sense, an article in the French daily newspaper Libération. In the same year he met Jacques Chirac, the then mayor of Paris know, and this could inspire premier for the type. Chirac initiated after his election as French president in 1995 together with Kerchache a department for this art direction at the Museum of the Louvre. A year later, Chirac announced a project to create a new museum that would devote themselves especially the kind premier. This plan met with criticism, for example, a strike of the employees of the Musée de l' Homme in 1999, who opposed a break-up of the collections of their museum and against the approach, the objects now priority basis and in an aesthetic aspect of the exhibition is not longer be considered only from a scientific point of view.

The museum has the status of établissement public ( German public body ). It is placed under three ministries: the Ministry of Culture and Communication ( Ministère de la culture et de la communication ), the Ministry of National Education ( Ministère de l' éducation nationale ) and the Ministry of Research ( Ministère à la recherche délégué ).
