Museo de la Palabra y la Imagen

The Museo de la Palabra y la Imagen (Spanish for Museum of the Word and of the image) is a Salvadoran Culture Museum in San Salvador, which is the result of a citizens' initiative in the early 1990s. Today, the museum has been established as a nonprofit foundation.

Since 2004, the Museum presents exhibitions in various important works of Salvadoran culture and Geschichtstguts, were in danger of being forgotten. Title of exhibitions such as " Legado de Salarrué ", " Memoria de los Izalcos ", " 1932 ", " De la Guerra y la Paz " or " Patria Peregrina - Pedro Geoffroy Rivas ". The objects are classified and digitized gradually. The collections include manuscripts, photographs, sound and video recordings, objects and publications that have been donated to the museum. This partly unique exhibits are open to researchers, faculty and students for study purposes and used to understand the socio-cultural development of the country and the preservation of the Salvadoran cultural heritage.

Collections

  • Collection: De la Guerra a la Paz: A collection of manuscripts, photographs, audio recordings, films, objects, diaries, and publications from the period of the Salvadoran Civil War ( 1981-1992 ).
  • Collection: Salarrué: Ehthält a variety of objects and the personal library of the main Salvadoran artist of the 20th century.
  • Collection: Roque Dalton: manuscripts, photographs and publications of the socially critical poet and fighter.
  • Collection: Prudencia Ayala: A Collection to the fight for women's rights in El Salvador.
  • Collection: " 1932 ": a copy of the collection from the Moscow archives with interviews of the survivors of the massacre of 1932 in El Salvador.

Archive

In addition to the historical collections, the museum has important archives that form the basis of the publications of the museum:

  • Film Library: The film library, with its recordings on the Civil War, Salvadoran film productions and recordings of television programs one of the most important video archives of the country.
  • Photo library: Contains over 35,000 images from 1872 to the present, the major Salvadoran figures and events.
  • Audiothek: Contains the transmissions of Radio Venceremos, as well as recordings for cultural and historical topics such as Testimony on the situation of human rights and women's rights in El Salvador.
  • Social Science Library: Specialized for historical research and social science issues in El Salvador and Central America.

The Museum in San Salvador

In the premises of the museum in the capital and in traveling exhibitions topics for identity, culture and historical memory of the country are presented. There are several exhibition halls and a cinema room. In addition, the Museo de la Palabra y la Imagen produces books, magazines and documentaries, and hosted numerous educational and cultural events.
